Utica to Raquette Lake

Utica to Raquette Lake

Take in the beautiful history and scenery of this scenic route!

Cycling

From Utica, take Rt. 12 north to Alder Creek. From there, follow Rt. 28 northeast through the old logging crossroads of Woodgate and McKeever. As you continue through Old Forge and Inlet, the highway follows the shorelines of the Fulton Chain of Lakes. The lakes themselves were once a highway of sorts, since transport was fastest and easiest on water routes during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

After about 73.3 beautiful miles, you will arrive in Raquette Lake.

Scenic Drives

Raquette Lake (raquette is the French word for snowshoe) is the birthplace of Adirondack Great Camp architecture. You can tour the lake on the tour boat W.W. Durant (named after the originating architect of Great Camps) or you can visit Great Camp Sagamore on its own lake, just south of the hamlet of Raquette Lake. Great Camp Sagamore, with an impressive main lodge in a compound of many other buildings, was one of the Vanderbilts' homes. It is now operated as a non-profit education center offering tours and special programs.
